We celebrated all of our young birthday parties and special events at one of several beautiful Miami parks. One was Peacock Park in Coconut Grove, or El parque de la 27 (27th Avenue Park) as it was called by the old folks. The family would gather at the crook of the elbow where McFarlane Road turns into South Bayshore Drive. One of my very early memories, maybe when I was 4 or 5 years old, was wandering off a bit from the family gathering and greeting some young hippies. The encounter lasted just a few seconds before someone from the family came and pulled me away, but I remember them … a boy and a girl hippie, cooing at me, waving “hi” and telling me I was cute. Despite the bad press I’ve had a soft spot for hippies ever since.
